Whether you’re a fan of Memphis basketball or a sucker for southern cuisine, this news is sure to have you excited. Memphis Tigers Head Coach Penny Hardaway is opening a restaurant in Downtown Memphis. Penny’s Nitty Gritty Upscale Southern is set to live inside the Westin Memphis Beal Street Hotel. That’s a slight jog away from the FedEx Forum! You can take family or friends to enjoy a meal before or after a game.

If you think the menu will only consist of food you’ll find at a concession stand, silence those thoughts. Gourmet Services Corporate Executive Chef Elizabeth A. Rodgers specially crafted the restaurant’s menu for your enjoyment. “When I tasted the food from the menu, I was blown away, and I know others will be too,” said Hardaway.

Some featured restaurant items include collard green fondue, a Penny loaf and many of Hardaway’s favorite dishes. As for dessert, Blissfully Southern Creamalicious Artisan Ice Cream will provide those sweet treats making Penny’s Nitty Gritty 100% minority-owned and operated. You can call that a slam dunk!

Hardaway also plans on becoming active at the restaurant. He won’t just be the guy whose name is in the title. You’ll have a chance to see the man himself! He intends to make frequent appearances and broadcast his radio and TV shows from the location.

So, when can you expect to get a taste of that Penny loaf? Soon! Doors will open late this August.
